Official Google Blog: Behind the scenes with universal search

If you haven’t noticed or heard yet Google is now displaying multiple (books, news, blogs and video) in the natural search results. What does this mean? If means that first page organic search result just became harder to get for those that do not have one and for those that retained their first page position, well theirs just became more valuable.

I just spent all morning analyzing the new search results and come across some very interesting changes. I am going to do a test before I announce anything, if I announce anything at all. That is all I am going to say about it. My clients will benefit from my research this morning but I don’t know if I am going to announce it to the world or not. I am sure other SEMs are going to want to keep it under their hats as well ;)

One thing that concerns me though is how Google’s is slowly taking over the first page results. Once you add (Google regulated) news, blogs, video etc. you are not going to have room for more (Natural) results. It looks like they are moving toward a more domination of the front page. Which is sad since that was what made them so famous in the first place.

When I first heard the news I thought nice, Google has done something similiar to Alltheweb Live Search and couldn’t wait to see it. I now see it is nowhere close to what Alltheweb is doing. Alltheweb is not displaying universal results yet, but I would guess it is just a matter of time. Yahoo picked a winner with that purchase. (Overture)

I’m going to try an example and see if it works. If you see the Alltheweb search engine below just start typing your query and you’ll start receiving results as you type. It is like Google Suggest but it is giving you actual results along with the suggestions. If you don’t see it below, just head over here and try it out.
