SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc. on Wednesday introduced a way to move its online software applications off the Internet, hoping the flexibility will encourage more people to use the free services and extend the company’s clout beyond its ubiquitous search engine.
By installing a plug-in into Web browsers, Google Gears opens an offline door to software programs that until now have been inaccessible without an Internet connection.
That will change with Gears, which will enable users to synchronize their computers with online applications and then use the programs offline.
Just what exactly is Google gears? Google says:
Google Gears is an open source browser extension that lets developers create web applications that can run offline. Gears provides three key features:
- A local server, to cache and serve application resources (HTML, JavaScript, images, etc.) without needing to contact a server
- A database, to store and access data from within the browser
- A worker thread pool, to make web applications more responsive by performing expensive operations in the background
In layman’s terms, if your a surfer then it is a browser plugin that will enable you to use certain web apps offline. If your a developer it will allow you to extend your web apps functionality offline. Google reader looks to be the first logical candidate. Thus allowing users to read their RSS feed subscriptions offline. Other uses will include email, spreadsheets and calendars.
Google is offering some Google Gear examples for your review. Please note though that you need to have Google gears installed before you can view and test the examples. You can download additional Google Gears resources as well.
Tomorrow we will test drive Gears and evaluate it’s usefulness thus far.

You have been bumped by YouTube (video), Local (Google Maps) and News (Google News) but don’t feel bad millions of others are feeling the pinch. I have been deciphering the new Google Universal Results and thought I would share my findings with you.
1. Video just got VERY important.
You may say well that holds true sites geared toward celebrities or bands etc. but wait look at these results. Here is a search on the particular car model Mclaren F1. Here is another example, caveman .
2. News just go important as well.
Here is a Dallas Cowboys search with the News results in the middle of the page and here is a Tennessee Titans search with the results at the top.
3. Local listings are probably more important to small local businesses than anyone else. What this is doing is giving small businesses the ability to compete with larger companies that have larger and deeper pockets. I was actually thinking about developing a search engine exactly for this purpose but declined when I saw Google offering the ability to connect you with the local business by simply inserting your phone number and pressing submit.
Ok what am I talking about? This Gatlinburg cabin search will give you the ability to expand several results to show them on the map. However if you have done your homework you will know that adding the state abbreviation will usually bring in better results as well as higher search count. We have also added rental since it is one of the more popular phrases. So when we do the same search WITH the state abbreviation, Gatlinburg TN cabin rental, you will get a local map automatically being returned with the top three results that have local business listings.
Now PAY ATTENTION, if you learn anything from this post it should at least be this. Those listings that were just displayed in the Gatlinburg TN cabin rental search were NOT in the top 10 natural listings for that search. How is that and how did they pull that off? They had a FREE local business listing with reviews. Again how much did this cost them? Nothing except for the time that it took to sign up for the listing! Now, I know for a fact that there are some campaigns that are paying a $100 or more a day for their adwords campaigns for these keywords. I can only imagine how many small companies that are spending heavily on particular keywords not knowing this.
The next question we need to answer is how to get listed in the top three of the local results :). I’m number one for anything related to Internet in Rogersville TN but that is not surprising since there are only a couple of us in this small town.
I will explore that question when I have more time.
BTW the reason why I still live in this small town and have not moved to California or New York is because I love the view from my back yard. The pictures below are views from the top of my hill, in my backyard. I will try to find and add a video later as well. I can see NC, KY, VA and the Smokey Mountains (which is 90 minutes away) on a clear day. It’s a nice view to say the least.

Google Trends Today
Google Trends Today is my mashup of Google Trends. My mashup is an RSS feed/webpage/email that is updated periodically throughout the day to give myself an idea of what the current most popular search terms are according to Google. Of course this is not a natural list, if it were you would see a number of “adult” terms that are not currently listed.
Google does not have a RSS feed for Google Trends so I had to create my own. My feed is actually showing you the changes in the positions of the search terms which Google is currently not doing. I guess you could call it Trending.
These terms are being updated in as close as real time as Google can get so if you try to compare my list with theirs you will see some differences. This is because by the time I take the results, whip it in an rss feed, and then syndicate it, it will have already changed some.
My mashup is still better than having to going to Google throughout the day to find out manually all day. One of the biggest advantages of the Internet is the ability to automate. If you are not automating your processes you will find yourself falling behind.

Are you looking for more syndication? Consider creating a custom Google toolbar button for those using the Google Toolbar. It’s amazing easily, even for the newbies out there. There are a number of ways you can set up your button and Google will walk you through it step by step. I created the Internet Marketing 2.0 Google toolbar button in less than 3 minutes. As a matter of fact I was so impressed I thought I would share this little secret with you my readers.
The first thing you are going to want to do is head over to the Google toolbar button gallery to check out a couple of samples that you can create. Next you will want to consider just what kind of button you can offer. The simplest button to make is a bookmark/rss feed. Here is a step by step guide on how to create a similar button.
After you create the button you can then submit it to the Button Gallery as well as link to the button from your website. As I have done here (clicking the link will install my custom button): Internet Marketing 2.0 Google toolbar button
Don’t fear of you are using Firefox. They have updated the Google toolbar (version 3) just recently to work with Firefox.
